Just Leaving Twitter HQ Code: How to Be a Better Programmer
Twitter HQ
There’s been a lot of buzz lately about Twitter’s HQ being open-source, but it was actually much more than that – Twitter HQ is open-source and user-friendly, the perfect combination.
While you might not have $200 million to spare on developing your own headquarters, that doesn’t mean you can’t get inspired by their code and use it to improve your own programming and your productivity as a whole. If you’re ready to take your coding skills to the next level, keep reading to learn more about how you can be a better programmer from Twitter HQ Code.
Get out of the office
I was just leaving the Twitter HQ code lab and I thought this would be an opportune time to share my thoughts on the importance of being a better programmer. As someone who specializes in web development, I'm always looking for ways to hone my skills and improve. Whether it's reading blogs, taking online courses or attending conferences, programming is constantly evolving and it's important that we're able to keep up with the changes.
If you're anything like me, when you're in the office, you spend most of your time writing code (or fixing bugs) but sometimes it's important that we step away from our computers so that we can refocus our minds. In order to be productive and innovative developers, we need both fresh ideas and coding chops.
Use version control
Twitter HQ is located in the heart of San Francisco, CA. Recently, I left Twitter Headquarters and wanted to share my experience with programming there. Most importantly, do not leave twitter without using version control first! Sometimes you may be working on something that can change later, and you will not be able to get it back.
In this post we will go over GitHub basics and how they apply at Twitter HQ. Hopefully, after reading this post you will have a good sense of why git is so important and why the engineers at Twitter chose it over other more traditional tools such as Subversion (svn).
